God Has Special Names for You in the Bible
His Chosen Treasure
Deuteronomy 7:6 (NLT): “For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.”
His Masterpiece
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT): “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
His Special Creation, Made in His Image
Genesis 1:27 (NLT): “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
His Special Creation, Made with a Purpose
Psalm 139:13-16 (NLT): “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”
His Adopted Child
Ephesians 1:5 (NLT): “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.”
His Friend
In John 15:15 (MSG), Jesus told His disciples, “You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.”
God also sees you as:
Forgiven - 1 John 1:9 (NLT) says, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
Accepted - Romans 15:7 (NLT): “Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.”
Free - John 8:36 (NLT): “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”
Blameless - Colossians 1:22 (NLT): “Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.”
Strong - Philippians 4:13 (NLT): “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”
Exercise: See Your Identity Through God’s Eyes
Out of this list of names (and ways that God sees you), which three resonate with you the most? Why?
How do these speak to your sense of identity?
How do these differ from what the world tells us about where we (as women) should find our identity (i.e., other people, culture, etc.)?
Why is it important to root our identity in God versus these other things?
