It’s Natural to Have Questions About Jesus
Questions that pertain specifically to Christmas. For example: Why was Jesus born into human history?
Questions about Jesus in general. For example: Who exactly is Jesus? Is He God? Does He love you?
Let’s look at one clear way that Jesus being born into human history is a display of God - and Jesus’ - unconditional love for you.
Jesus Displays God’s Love By Being the Son of God
God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three distinct persons within one being (aka God).
This is what’s referred to as the trinity or triune God.
It’s difficult for our human brains to comprehend, but God is actually one being with three distinct personas.
In the case of Jesus, His distinct persona is often referred to as the Son of God.
He’s called this because, when He was born into human history, He was God manifested into human form.
In other words, He was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:35 (NLT) says: The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.” (Note: The angel said this to Mary, the mother of Jesus.)
Matthew 1:18-21 (NLT) says: This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Emphasis mine.)
Going back to the triune--where God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three distinct personas within God—this means a few key things:
1) God came down to earth.
Yes, God is omnipresent–which means He exists everywhere all of the time. But He exists as spirit. He’s not required to physically enter into His creation.
But because God loves us and He wants a relationship with us, He willingly chose to do just that.
2) God the Father willingly sent His one and only Son to be born into human history.
God is holy–which means He is 100% set apart from all evil (which includes all sin and wickedness).
After the Fall in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world and fractured our relationship with God. We couldn’t fully approach Him or enterally dwell with Him because He’s holy and we’re not.
God could have left us in that awful predicament. He could have thrown up His hands and left us to our own mess. But He loves us too much! In fact, as John 4:16 says, God actually is love.
So instead, He sent Jesus.
John 3:16 (NLT): “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
3) Being part of the triune God, Jesus also loves us and also willingly came to earth to do God the Father’s will.
There’s an idea that’s become prevalent recently that says God the Father has to be an abusive dad because He sent Jesus to be tortured and die on the cross.
As someone who grew up with an abusive earthly father, I understand how this idea can seem valid. When we’ve suffered abuse, especially at the hands of our earthly dad, we tend to initially view God the Father through the same lens.
The trouble with that, though, is that the Bible and its truth clearly show a different story.
As we’ve already looked at, Jesus is part of the triune God. He’s called the Son of God because He was God manifested into human form.
Yes, there is a hierarchy within the three distinct personas. This is why Jesus says in the Bible that He has come to do God the Father’s will.
But because Jesus is also God, He loves us deeply and unconditionally. And He willinging died for our sins.
As such, Jesus being born into human history 2,000 years ago is an immensely positive thing!
As is celebrating that even–and the triune God’s love for us–every year at Christmas!
